Eight Belles
3year old Thoroughbred Filly Of Fox Hill Farms Races to her death at Curchill Downs Louiseville, Kentucky May 3rd 2008 May she RIP http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdDwm3QIwfg&feature=related
Above is a YouTube link to the Tribute of 8 belles. She was an amazing 3 year old filly who raced for her life May 3rd, 2008. Due to her racing injuries she had to be immidiately euthanized at the track of Church hill downs. She suffered from bilateral compound fractures of both frontal ankle bones.
My own TB/ Andalusian filly of 2004 was introduced to her saddle last fall. She was quite protestant at first. Through patience and time she decided it wasn't going to kill her and allowed us to aboard her and go for a walk. This year she will be introduced to the bit. She has in the mean time learned to cross-tie and trailer safely. I can't image sending her out to run for her life around a short track. being whacked every so many strides to move FASTER!!!! She is the first at the gate everyday I go to meet her. She enjoys our time together and I would never let $$ dictate that. My husband I were so lucky to be present for her first few steps on this earth and I can only hope she has a billion more to take!!
Horses are not born to be ridden. They, as we do, need to learn the skill it takes to move 1000 + pounds of organs and muscle over their fragile skeleton to carry our burdens. They were born to forage, procreate, and be eaten (in nature). Not be the livelyhood of greedy billion dollar income owners, who have probably never even had the opportunity to muck out a stall of horse dung.
Horses don't care if they win the blue ribbon or the 1000$ purse at the Kentucky Rolex. They want to live as close to nature intended and evolve. Trainers and riders who lack the compassion or knowledge to promote that will only fail at the expense of the horse.
I feel horses are here for us to learn more about nature and ourselves. After all, we are part of nature as they are. When we open our minds and hearts and search for the correct knowledge to make the best decisions, we will succeed and so will our horses. Horses have a lot to teach us, if we are only willing to listen......
